Accutane was developed and sold for over 25 years by Hoffmann-LaRoche, which is the American division of The Roche Group. Roche is one of the largest medical supply companies on the globe, selling pharmaceuticals, vitamins and testing equipment around the world.
Subsidiaries of Roche have been in the news around the world for False Claims on the government, fraudulent conduct, discovery abuses, and patent infringement. In some years the company budgeted over one billion dollars for criminal fines, penalties, and settlement of cases. During an investigation of Hoffmann-LaRoche, one Congressman stated that the company, "put profits before people".
Roche stopped making and selling Accutane in the United States in June of 2009, citing business reasons. Some attribute the decision to the growing number of lawsuits filed by people who suffered severe side effects after taking the medication. At the time Roche discontinued Accutane, they were making $1.2 billion per year from the sales of the drug in the United States alone.
To date, approximately 5,000 lawsuits have been filed against Roche by people with side effects including Bowel Inflammation or Irritation, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Birth Defects, Hair Loss or Blindness.
Those injured by its use have recovered more than $33 million in damages for their medical bills, pain and future costs.
